The girl who faded away

The girl who faded away
Carla slid down the banister to search for her pink polka dot tank top and her blue jeans.

Carla has bright blue eyes that always sparkled when she smiled, she had the best grades in her class, played on the Junior Girls Volleyball team for 2 years, Carla is very tall and is 13 years old she will be turning 14 in December.

Carla and her mom were off to Florida this morning. They had a 9:45am flight, and were heading to the airport. Carla had never been Florida before, but she has been to New York. That was her last trip with her dad, before he died in a car accident on the way back from work one evening. Her dad was a very hard worker, Carla never saw him a lot and it was hard to get over his passing. Now it was just her and her mom.

“Honey, we have to leave now we need to be at least an hour early, for the flight”, shouted her mom.

“Yes I’m coming, but it’s going to take a Heavy DUTY Truck to carry my luggage”, yelled Carla back.

“Carla are you excited for your first trip to a hot location”?

“Well, I am but it will be different without dad around”.

“Yes, I know it’s hard and emotional but let’s just try to have fun”!

“Ok mom, now quick we have to get our tickets and good seats so that we can see the beautiful view of the sky”.

The West Jet plane took off at exactly 9:45, Carla and her mom got 2nd row seats and they could see the amazing view. Carla had NO homework over the holiday, because it was a 2 week winter break and she was going to miss all her friends. She was going to especially miss Molly, who she was best buds with since Kindergarten and did everything together.

As the plane was landing Carla felt butterflies in her stomach and her ears were popping, it had only been the second time she had ever flown and she wasn’t an expert on landing.

Carla and her mom got a bright yellow taxi to the Days Inn hotel, they were staying there for a week and then going to her mom’ sister place for the 2nd week.

“WOW, look at the huge mansion”, exclaimed Carla with her mouth wide open.

“That’s beautiful, I would love to live in house”, said her mom.

“I can already tell we are going to have a blast here”, smiled Carla!

Carla and her mom arrived at the hotel, as soon as they got there, Carla hit the huge pool and her mom stayed in the room to watch Entertainment Tonight and ordered an extra large pizza with cheese!

Carla sprinted over to the hot tub as she got out of the ice cold pool. “Ah, this is nice”, she said to herself as she sinks down with her back against the roaring jet. After awhile Carla’s face was getting red HOT! She jumped out of the hot tub and as she was walking to get a towel, she rammed into a girl who looked about her age and had a green 2 piece bathing suit on.

“Oh, SORRY”, said Carla.

“That’s fine, I bumped into to you first don’t worry”, replied the girl.

The girl seems really kind and caring, thought Carla and maybe I should ask her what her name is, how old she is, and how long she is staying for here in Florida.

Carla started to talk to this girl, her name is Sarah and she is the same age as Carla, lives in the same province as Carla, and is staying here for a week on her winter break. Sarah and Carla go to the pool with each other every night and go to the arcade afterwards!!

“WOW, I can’t believe it’s already been 3 days, it’s seemed like 200”, exclaimed Sarah, as her and Carla were drying off from the wet cold water.

“Yah, your right and we still have a 4 fun days left together”, replied Carla!!

As the days were getting shorter and time was running out, Sarah hadn’t told Carla that she only had 9 weeks to live the rest of her enjoyable life. Sarah was slowly suffering from Bone Cancer; she was very weak at times and got extremely tired.

Oh, it’s already 7:00 at night said Carla to herself as she glanced at the big bold numbers of the red clock. She was headed for Sarah’s room and excited to jump into the hot tub, with her best bud!!

“HELLO, is anyone there”, asked Carla?

“Oh, sorry honey I didn’t hear you there”, replied Sarah’s mom.

“Is Sarah able to come over to the pool tonight”?

“No, she is sick and horribly tired, we might have to take her to the hospital tonight”, explained Sarah’s mom.

“Can I see her, or is it really bad”?

“It’s really bad sweetie”.

“Well what’s wrong, does she have a cold or allergies”?

“No, its much worse…Sarah has bone cancer and only 9 weeks to live this was going to be her last vacation till she passes away”, whispered Sarah’s mom as she had a tear fall from her left cheek.

“I’m so sorry I didn’t realize, I guess we won’t be going to the park anymore or having pizza or, or have running races to the pool”, Carla said running off down the hallway as tears came pouring out.

At 3 in the afternoon Carla had just got back from the beautiful beach, Carla got very tanned threw out this vacation! And she loved to have darker skin then her original.

She headed over to room 127 in the hotel to see her new best friend Sarah!!
Sarah’s mom going out of the room to get some cold ice for her refreshing favorite drink Pepsi!

“Oh, hi Carla I didn’t see you there”, exclaimed Sarah’s mom.

“Hi, is Sarah back from the hospital yet and how is she feeling”, asked Carla?

“No, there’s been some horrible news honey”, replied Sarah’s mom.

“What, what is it”?

“At 1am last night Sarah passed away and was horribly sick from her cancer, the doctor that took x-rays on her was wrong”, said Sarah’s mom very sober.

“That can’t be, I didn’t even get to say good-bye to her”, said Carla very sad with tears building up.

“I’m leaving tomorrow to go home and see the rest of my family”, explained Sarah’s mom.

Oh no, thought Carla to herself How could this be? Carla booked it off to her room and stayed in bed the whole night watching her and Sarah’s favorite show; That’s so Raven.

1 week later

Carla was safely home now, and her winter break was over. As school was starting up again she was happy to see Molly and all the boys, but she found it difficult to not have Sarah there or communicate with her on the phone or talk with her on e-mail each other.

On January, 11 2006 was Sarah’s funeral and Carla was there in her silk black dress and high black shoes with a nice black hat to finish her outfit off, wherever Carla went she always had to be fashionable!!

After the funeral Carla felt a lot better and had said good-bye to Sarah.

Now, every year on winter break Carla and her mom go to Florida!
